IPv6 Business Information Exchange - July 22, 2008
These are the minutes of the IPv6 Business Information Exchange meeting held on July 22, 2008.
What plans does ARIN have to take back IPv4 addresses?
What kind of IPv6 assignment should be asked for from ARIN? /48? Higher?
Do we have any statistics on IPv6? The issues of concern are:
- How much IPv6 is travelling over the Internet?
- How many security violations have there been for IPv6?
- Who has IPv6 assignments?
The lack of IPv6 NAT was discussed in quite a bit of detail. (Since
the July 22 meeting, we have found out that IPv6 NAT is being developed but will
not be a mature technology for at least 5 years.)
- Many people feel that NAT is a good way to hide internal topology;
others disagree vehemently. Some feel that if NAT is your security
mechanism, then that is a pretty fragile strategy. Others feel that NAT is
one important way among MANY to protect the network.
- Without something like NAT which understands IPv6, then during IPv6 migration
potentially every device on the network will need to be touched. This is
a tremendously expensive undertaking.
Migration issues
- Real options and strategies for migration need to be developed.
- How much equipment will need to be thrown out?
